A lot of people desire to get their teeth straightened and have a beautiful smile. However, the phobia and anxiety of having braces prevent them from undergoing the treatment. “Do braces hurt?” “How bad is it?” “How does it feel like having braces?” Here is a quick guide to answer your questions and make you feel as relaxed as possible if getting braces is on your mind.

How long would it take to put on my braces?

It depends on the type of braces you choose. It takes around 1-2 hours to have braces placed on for most patients. First, your teeth will be cleaned and dried by the dentist.  Next, he or she will apply special glue that holds the brackets on. The dentist would then place wires on the brackets and secure them with elastic bands.

Do braces hurt when you first get them?

During the procedure, you will not feel any pain, but your teeth and gums will probably be a little sore afterward. The wires and rubber bands apply pressure on your teeth to move them. It takes some time to get used to this pressure. You may experience the following during the first week after getting braces: pressure and discomfort in your teeth and gums, particularly when chewing, soreness or discomfort on the inside of your cheeks, and some minor cuts on your tongue from running it across the new braces.

How long will I take to get used to braces?

In about one month, most individuals get used to their braces. You may not even notice them after six months. However, it is normal, from time to time, to experience some soreness.

Will there be pain during recall appointments?

You need to visit your orthodontist every few weeks for adjustments. Your orthodontist tightens the wires, springs, or elastic bands to increase the tension during each visit. This can cause mild soreness or discomfort for a few days.

How to deal with the discomfort?

Orthodontic discomfort can be handled efficiently with over-the-counter pain medications. Your braces specialist may also give you soft wax that you can use if your braces are rubbing against the inside of your mouth. Wax offers a safety layer that decreases the risk of cuts or sores.

It’s natural to be anxious about braces. But remember, discomfort due to braces can be easily managed and should not keep you away from your dream smile!
