If you have misaligned teeth or an irregular bite, your dentist will suggest appliances called ‘braces’ to correct and improve your smile. Your family dentist will refer you to an orthodontist who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.

There are various types of braces available today. By applying steady and gentle force, the braces shift the teeth slowly in the correct position. Choosing the correct type depends on a number of variables, such as aesthetics, cost, and allergy.

Metal braces:

These are the traditional and most common types of bracelets. They are typically made of high-end stainless steel. Metal braces are fixed to the teeth and the wire is secured with elastic rubber bands to move the teeth.

Ceramic braces:

These braces are a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces. The brackets are made from ceramic to match the color of the teeth. Clear elastic ties are used. The straightening method is the same as the metal braces.

Lingual braces:

These braces are positioned on the inner side of your teeth facing the tongue and are not visible. This is done for aesthetic reasons and uses custom metal brackets and wires to shift teeth.

Invisible aligners:

These are the latest alternatives to conventional braces. They are a series of clear plastic appliances custom made to match your mouth. There are no brackets, wires, or rubber ties as seen in conventional braces, and therefore much more discreet and comfortable. These plastic trays can be completely removed when you eat, offering you a lot more choice in food.

Irrespective of the type of braces, your orthodontist may also want you to wear a retainer after completion of treatment to ensure that the results remain stable.
