GOAN BEACHES TO GET NEW LOOK – GOA’S TOURISM MINISTER TAKES ON GARBAGE ISSUES AND PROPOSES THE CREATION OF WHATSAPP NUMBER FOR GARBAGE MANAGEMENT

According to the sources in the Goa Tourism Department, the Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Mr. Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar had reviewed an issue concerning to the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene on the Goan beaches and ordered the concern authorities to take up the Garbage issue prevailing the Goan beaches and give the new facelift to the Goa’s pristine beaches.

According to the sources, Department of Tourism will initiate the new WhatsApp number (Not Announced Yet) which will help the authorities to take action against the garbage menace created on the Goa’s beaches. “As a stop-gap arrangement until concrete measures are put in place to ensure cleanliness and hygiene on the beaches of Goa, a new whatsapp  initiative is being set up by the existing contractor and will be monitored round-the- clock by the Department of Tourism, Govt. of Goa,” said the sources.

The WhatsApp number has not announced as yet but will be done in the near future, said the sources. “The WhatsApp number will be announced shortly wherein the general public can use the same to connect with the existing arrangement made by the Department of Tourism for cleaning of beaches in the State.” The WhatsApp number will enable the general public to send an information of the garbage dump/menace on the beaches of Goa along with the WhatsApp location. On the receipt of the information the designated contractor will carry out the job of cleaning that beach within the 24 hours of the notification and inform the same to the Tourism department, said the sources.

Although this is not the permanent solution for the existing garbage issue in Goa but the Department of Tourism will take all interim measures to deal with this issue until the permanent solutions are worked out in this direction.  In the meantime, Mr. Azgaonkar has instructed the Department of Tourism to expedite the tendering process for beach cleaning works in a time bound manner. The hon’ble Minister for Tourism also reviewed the status on the project for having toilets, urinals and changing rooms and other utility facilities on the beaches.

Mr. Azgaonkar was addressing the meeting of degenerates and tourism stakeholders at Paryatan Bhavan at Patto Panaji. Mr. Azgaonkar also discussed the issues concerning tourism and reviewed measures being taken to curb nuisance being caused on the beaches by hackers and other unauthorized activities. The meeting was attended by Director of Tourism, Mr. Menino D’Souza, Managing Director, GTDC, Mr. Nikhil Desai, officials from the Department of Tourism and others.

The officials have been instructed by the Minister to submit the status report on various issues and activities within a week’s time. The Minister for Tourism will thereafter convene a meeting of all stakeholders to put a final plan into action. The Hon’ble Minister for Tourism has expressed his keenness of ensuring that the beaches in Goa remain clean and locals Goenkars and tourists will not inconvenience at any given point of time throughout the year, said the sources.
