Rajeev Gomes, one of the Goa’s prominent criminal lawyers succumbed to the Covid infection in one of the well known private hospitals in South Goa. His death comes as shock to the entire state since he was very healthy and full of life kind of person.
According to the reports, he was admitted in the private hospital in Margao soon after his oxygen level went down due to the covid infection. But only in few days he lost the battle with the Covid infection and passed away on Wednesday evening.
Gomes one of the prominent lawyer in criminal field represented some of the very high profiles cases including the Babush Moseratte and the rape case of Tehelka chief Tarun Tejpal the judgement in which is awaited. The pronouncement of the judgement in the case, which was slated for Wednesday, was adjourned to May 19.
Goa’s Chief minister Pramod Sawant said he was saddened by the passing away “of prominent Goan lawywer Adv Rajeev Gomes”, “feeling devastated”, was how leader of opposition Digambar Kamat reacted on learning of Gomes’s demise.
“Deeply shocked and pained by the sad demise of my esteemed colleague Adv Rajiv Gomes. A great loss to the legal fraternity,” commissioner of NRI affairs and BJP general secretary Narendra Sawaikar said in his condolence message.
Gomes was a mentor to many young lawyers and his passing has created a deep void and brought about a sense of gloom amongst the legal fraternity. “Well, whom do we turn up to now senhor Rajeev Gomes? Will remember every bit of time spent with you?” young lawyer Hrishikesh Kadam posted on Facebook, a sentiment shared by many whom Gomes mentored.
Mr Gomes is now gone, left for the heavenly abode, but before leaving he left one message for the Goan brothers and sisters. This message was circulating on the social media platform after his death, and hence the authenticity of this message could not be verified, but regardless of that, this is very important and everyone must read and implement it.

My dearest friends. I write to you from Covid hospital. I got infected on 19/4. It was just a simple sore throat and fever. Considering my regular exercise regimen, I always believed that even though I would one day contact covid I would be asymptomatic.
However I’ve had the rudest shock of my life. My fever just wouldn’t go off till I was at home during home quarantine treatment under guidance of 2 well known doctors. Fever was normal to 102 regularly. My sp02 levels plummeted to 82 on saturday night. Luckily I had an oxygen cylinder at night which held me safe for the night and kept my spo2 levels at 95/96. Eventually I decided to get hospitalized on 24th.
I have since there been on oxygen 24-7. I can hardly take 2 steps without acute breathlessness. I cant speak 8 words without acute breathlessness. No sense of smell. Today I got my sense of taste back. I’m pocked with Jelcos to administer ivs. It’s very horrible and terrible. Its life threatening and dangerous.
I implore and beg all you friends, dont take this virus for granted. Its unlike the earlier variant. It’s far too dangerous. Take all precautions required.
