Getting your children to brush their teeth isn’t always easy. Explaining how essential oral care is just doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. Your kids have probably resisted, chucked a tantrum, or brushed for less than the recommended two-minute period when it is their tooth brushing time. Here are a few parenting ideas and strategies that can make brushing teeth enjoyable for your kid!

1. Create and stick to a fun routine

By cranking up the favourite song of your child and holding a two-minute dance party with them, make your routine a fun experience that your child can enjoy. Brushing apps or videos can also be used to help your little one’s time fly by. To keep them focused on something other than just brushing, you might also try to read them a 2-minute story. Get innovative in the routine and add some fun!

2. Select a cool toothbrush

When shopping, let your child pick out his own toothbrush and toothpaste. If their toothbrush looks fun and cool, they have more fun brushing their teeth. Today, there is an array of kid toothbrushes that will make tooth brushing a lot more enjoyable, from familiar cartoon characters to those in the form of animals such as penguins or cats. Using an electric toothbrush instead of a manual can also make brushing fun for kids.

3. Reward them for brushing

In order to get children to develop good behaviours, positive reinforcement is excellent. Give a small reward to your child every time they brush their teeth. Consider what motivates them while selecting the prize. Create a reward chart if your toddler likes stickers, and let them add one right after brushing. If your toddler likes to read, let him pick a book with bedtime stories. Rewards don’t need to be sophisticated to work!

4. Brush together

Children find group tasks especially fun and they love to do things that big people do. Why not make brushing your teeth a family activity, then? It is the perfect way to teach your child the best way to brush their teeth.

5. Create a story

Haven’t found a story or character that inspires your child? Make up your own! Dreaming up a story is one imaginative trick to inspire brushing. Your child may just be the only superhero to be able to brush away the bad guys that are causing cavities.

Tooth brushing for either you or your children does not have to be a nightmare. Use the tips from this blog to make tooth brushing fun. Be imaginative, and find a way that works best for you and your little ones. Let us know your favourite ways of motivating your children to brush, and we’ll add to this list.
